Eagles Wide Receiver Stats through 6 games:
Jordan Matthews- 25 catches- 354 yards- 2 touchdowns
Nelson Agholor- 18 catches- 191 yards- 1 touchdown
Dorial Green Beckham- 13 catches- 139 yards- 1 touchdown
Josh Huff- 12 catches- 63 yards- 1 touchdown
How we are 4-2 with wide receivers like this is beyond me. I just don’t get it. We invested high draft picks in 3 of those receivers and the other one we traded for was a 2nd round pick. Jordan Matthews aside, this wide receiver play is just unacceptable. Our offense now ranks in the bottom tier in the league in total yards per game and passing yards per game. We can’t survive like this all season long. It’s not shocking to hear the trade rumors floating around that the Eagles are interested in trading for deep threat SF WR Torrey Smith and are inquiring about Bear WR Alshon Jeffrey. General Manager Howie Roseman knows that this position is a weak point on this team and it is starting to affect the development of rookie QB Carson Wentz. If our defense wasn’t playing at such a high level we would probably be a 2-4 team. Wentz can’t do this all on his own. He needs someone else to step up. It’s not just the WR’s though, the tight ends have had barely any production as well. Here’s a look at the stats on them below:
Tight End Stats through 6 games:
Zach Ertz- 11 catches- 131 yards- 0 touchdowns
Brent Celek- 5 catches- 79 yards- 0 touchdowns
Trey Burton- 9 catches- 80 yards- 1 touchdown
This was supposed to be Zach Ertz’s breakout year. So far it hasn’t happened. He had a good first game against Cleveland but ended up getting hurt and missing the next two games because of that injury. He has worked his way back slowly registering only two catches in the last two weeks. For someone who just signed a pretty big contract extension these numbers just aren’t adding up. Something has to give here. It’s not all on Ertz though. There have been times where he is open but Wentz just hasn’t been able to get him the ball. I seem to think that every game is going to be his breakout game but it just hasn’t happened yet. In order for this team to be able to keep winning football games someone has to step up here.By stepping up, I mean get open for one. I re watched this last Eagles game and for a majority of it there was literally no one open at all. Our WR’s just cant seem to get any separation and its embarrassing. Our tight ends have a little more space to work with but Wentz was pressing trying to get them the ball because no one else was open and that’s what led to his first interception. On the second pick he tried to throw the receiver open because he couldn’t get open but Minnesota played it perfectly.
Unless Howie can pull off another miracle trade this week, we will be stuck with this same group of receivers and tight ends for this upcoming game Sunday night against the Cowboys. This Dallas defense isn’t all that imposing and I don’t see a reasonable excuse why we won’t have either one of our tight ends or WR’s breakout. This may be the game that gives our offense the confidence it needs to move forward with this tough schedule. So far the weakest part of this team is the WR’s and tight ends, there is no doubt about it. Their inabilities thus far are putting added pressure on a rookie QB to make plays and that’s why I believe he has turned the ball over lately. Let’s hope WR coach Greg Lewis wakes his players up and they take a deep look at themselves in the mirror. They are holding back this team so far; Fingers crossed here that they can finally wake up this Sunday night in Dallas.
